You just need to know what to focus on and where to start. This guide will walk you through simple, non-techy steps to help your Showit website start ranking on Google, so your ideal clients can actually find you.

One of the biggest mistakes I see with SEO? People assume their website is automatically showing up on Google. But unless you tell Google your site exists, it might not be indexed properly (or at all).

How to check if Google even knows your website exists

1. Go to Google and type – site:yourwebsite.com
   • Example – site:septemberstudio.co
2. If your site shows up, great! Google has indexed it.
3. If nothing shows up, you need to submit your website to Google ASAP.

How to Submit Your Showit Website to Google

1. Set up Google Search Console (it’s free!).
2. Add your website URL and verify ownership.
3. Submit your site’s XML sitemap (this tells Google how to crawl your site).

If your site isn’t indexed, your SEO doesn’t matter, because no one can find you! This is the first step before anything else.

Fix your Showit SEO titles and meta descriptions

Every page on your site has two crucial elements that show up in Google search results:

SEO Title → This is the bold blue link you click on Google and also what shows up in your browser tabs.
Meta Description → The short snippet underneath the title.

If these aren’t optimized with keywords, Google has no idea what your site is about, and neither do your potential clients.

How to write click-worthy SEO titles

• Keep them under 60 characters so they don’t get cut off.
• Include keywords that describe what you do.
• Example: “Timeless Wedding Photography for Modern Brides | Sage & Lace”

How to write meta descriptions that get clicks

• Keep it under 156 characters.
• Make it descriptive and enticing, but not clickbaity.
• Example: “Elevated brand and web design for interior designers ready to attract high-end clients.”

Every single page on your website should have a unique SEO title and meta description. If you’re looking for these settings in Showit just click on the page you want to edit in the left side panel then find SEO settings on the right side panel and edit away.

Choose the right keywords and actually use them correctly

If your website is a needle in a haystack, keywords are what help Google find the needle. Your goal should be to figure out what your ideal clients are searching for and then use those words on your website.

How to find keywords for your Showit website

• Use Google Autocomplete → Start typing a search related to your business and see what Google suggests. This is my favorite way to do it and it’s completely free.
• Check Ubersuggest → Another favorite because it shows you which keywords are oversaturated or easier to rank for.
• Try Keywords Everywhere (free Chrome extension) → This shows actual search volume for different keywords.

Where to use keywords on your Showit website

• Pages titles and meta descriptions
• Headings (H1, H2, H3)
• Website copy (but naturally, no keyword stuffing!)
• Image titles and Alt text

Here’s a tip: Instead of broad keywords like “wedding photographer”, use long-tail keywords like “timeless wedding photography for modern brides.” These are easier to rank for and attract more targeted traffic.

Google needs structure so use the right heading tags

Search engines prioritize structured content, and the way your headings are set up tells Google what’s important on each page. Think of it as one of those outlines our English teachers made us do in school before we wrote an essay or paper.

How to structure headings for SEO

• Only ONE H1 per page → This should be your main title and include a primary keyword. Example: “Luxury Interior Design in Los Angeles”.
• Use H2’s & H3’s for subheadings → These should break up sections and include secondary keywords. For example, I’ve been using H2;s and H3’s on this blog. The heading above, “Google needs structure so use the right tags”, is an H2 because it starts a new section in the blog, while the heading, “How to structure headings for SEO”, is an H3 because it is a subsection that falls under the broader H2 topic.
• Use P tags for body text → Google reads paragraph (P) tags as supporting content, not as important headings.

You can find all of these settings in your Showit website by clicking on a text box and navigating the right hand panel under Text Properties where you can choose the Text Tag for that piece of content.

Optimize your images because your site speed matters for SEO

If your website loads too slowly, Google may lower your rankings.

How to fix slow images on Showit

• Resize your images before uploading (aim for 150-250KB max).
• Use TinyPNG or JPEGmini to compress images. If you have a Mac you can also do this in Finder → More → Convert Image to JPEG.
• Rename your images before uploading to Showit. The title “IMG_1234” won’t rank for anything, but “modern-minimalist-wedding-photography.jpg” will.
• Always fill out alt text (Google reads this to understand your images).

Google and other search engines can’t “see” images the way we do, so they rely on file names and alt text to understand what the image is about.

Google loves fresh content so blog regularly
